The Arizona Bark Scorpion

The Arizona Bark Scorpion is the only scorpion in the United States considered medically significant. Its venom can cause severe pain, numbness, tingling and in vulnerable individuals such as young children and the elderly, more serious symptoms requiring medical attention. Unlike most scorpions, bark scorpions are excellent climbers and can be found on walls, ceilings and inside shoes, bedding and clothing.
Bark scorpions are nocturnal and most active in warm months, though Tucson's mild winters mean they can be active year round. They are drawn to moisture, harborage areas like rock piles and wood, and wherever their prey is abundant. Understanding their biology is the key to controlling them effectively.
